Putnam Habitat for Humanity (PHH) was founded in 1991. Since that time, we
have worked with community volunteers and students to build 30 houses in
Putnam County, Florida.
We were incorporated in July, 1990. By the end of that year, we received
full affiliateship from Habitat for Humanity International.
From 1998 to 2003 we occupied offices at 126 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka.
In November of 2003 we moved to our present construction office trailer
located on one of our construction sites at 1605 Westover Drive, Palatka.
Oversite for our affiliate is performed by our dedicated all-volunteer
Board of Directors. Our office is staffed by one full-time Executive
Director, one part-time Administrative Assistant, one part-time Bookkeeper,
and two part-time Volunteers. Board meetings are held every two months
on the first Monday of the month at the Putnam County Library in Palatka
and are open to the public.
Support
PHH receives grants from the State Housing Incentive Partnership (SHIP),
the Self-Help Home Ownership Program (SHOP), The State of Florida's Tax
Credit Program, Wal-Mart, Publix Supermarkets, United Way of Putnam County,
Georgia-Pacific, Lowes Home Improvement, Yale Locks, and Whirlpool.
Significant support comes from people like you who are kind enough to make
donations to our ministry and by the dozens of Putnam County Volunteers
who contribute volunteer hours to build our houses. Major support is given
by our local Dunkin Donuts, St. Johns GM Superstore, First Federal Bank of
North Florida, and the Putnam County Federal Credit Union.
How the Program Works
The Habitat program is a hand UP, not a hand OUT. Habitat families are
selected by our Family Selection Committee based on need, willingness to
partner (by performing hundreds of "sweat equity" hours working on the
construction site on either their own or someone else's home), and the
ability to repay the no-interest mortgage. PHH is an equal opportunity
organization and does not discriminate according to age, race, religion,
gender, or marital status.
Our houses are built using mostly volunteer labor. Our "hard costs" consist
of building materials, land, and permits. We then sell our houses to selected
families at no profit, with 20-year no-interest mortgages, carried and
serviced by PHH.
Each year we conduct several PHH Orientation Meetings. Those interested
in applying for home ownership must attend the orientation. Application
forms will be filled out at that time. More information may be picked up
at our office.
Working together we can make a difference in Putnam County!
